Now, lying in her own bed upstairs, feeling the muscles in her legs, back, and arms relax, Grace gave thanks for the blessings of good friends, for Bob and his family, and for her comfortable life. She turned over and snuggled a pillow, but she couldn’t still her mind. Old Man was gone. She had known him for only four years, yet it felt like the end of an era. Was Old Man a soul now, floating over them, looking down and blessing Lurina? She hoped so. It hit her that amazingly, she no longer feared death, only the act of dying, and then only if it were painful, long and drawn out like Charles’s and Ted’s last illnesses had been.

Until tonight, the idea of dying, of no longer being conscious of her own being, had been an absolutely frightening concept. She did not want to die for a good long while—not for another fifteen or even twenty years, if she got her diabetes under control. Her mind drifted from Old Man’s death to her own health.

After the fire she had lost twelve pounds; all the stress and worry had taken away her appetite. Over time, she had regained six pounds and several more on the ship. Yesterday, when she checked her blood sugar, it had been almost three hundred. That scared her. Guilt at neglecting herself filled her, followed by anxiety. She must get a grip on this eating business or she’d be dead sooner rather than later. But not quite yet, please, God . At that moment, in the still, dark night, Grace resolved to change her eating habits. With that issue settled, within seconds she was fast asleep.
